Cross section, polished on one side, of a bone of the dinosaur Atlasaurus imelakei. It measures 8.6 x 7 cm and is 1.4 cm thick. The bone trabeculae are clearly visible.
*Atlasaurus imelakei (Greek: “giant Atlas reptile”) lived in the middle of the Jurassic period, in Africa. Its remains were found by Monbaron, Russell and Taquet in 1999 in the Tiougguit Formation of the Atlas Mountains in the Province of Azilal, Morocco in North Africa. Its generic name comes from Titan Atlas who held the sky on his back, and from the Arabic Imelake which means giant.
